Is the Value of Rare Coins More Than $?

Thinking of the value of rare coins, even the least financially motivated collector will have some idea of what his coins are worth.

Worth – in the coin market, that is.

Whatever the historical or sentimental value, each owner of coins, whether collector or investor, knows that his coins have a market value -- a coin collector value. This is not news.

But, it is the relative importance of this fact to each that distinguishes a collector from an investor.

Each approaches the question of rare coin value from a different point of view.

It is always fascinating to see the enthusiasm for coins that most of us will have for the hastily dumped contents of the family change jar, grandma’s old change purse, or a teapot full of pennies from a WWII era attic.

Collectors know that there are many ways to perceive value in their coins. Very soon, it’s more than, “Oh, look at all the money!”

Many who have taken up the coin hobby remember the curiosity an unexpected discovery of old coins brought forth. For coins, apart from their intrinsic value, are connectors. The value of rare coins is experienced through their connection with so many facets of human living.

For example…

Coin collector value is often rooted in the perception of coins as national symbols and artifacts of history.

Consider also how your coins exemplify an artistic trend or style.

Many a coin collection has begun with the last pocket change of a fondly remembered foreign vacation. Coin collecting values may begin on a more personal level when coins are souvenirs of travel or other significant family experience.

And of course there are tie-ins with other hobbies and interests. Think photography, stamp collecting, or metal detecting!

Right... But What Are My Coins Worth?

...on the coin market, in dollars and cents (or whatever)?

An excellent way to learn actual market value of rare coins (or even not so rare) is to look in on eBay. Here you will find what real people are bidding on real coins - nothing theoretical here - real money for specific coins in every grade imaginable.

What About Face Value Investing?

Could that work? Should I put away some nice new coins from the bank? How about some crisp new dollar bills?

Interesting concept - Let's look into that HERE.

Pennies Are Worth Next To Nothing, Right?

It depends on how you calculate the value of a penny...
