US State Quarters – Coin Collecting at Face ValueThe US State Quarters program has broadened the appeal of coin collecting to the American public in a way not seen since the commemorative half dollar offerings of the 20’s and 30’s. Few government organizations enjoy the continuous public visibility of the US Mint. Wisely, the state quarters series is, first and foremost, a production coinage program. Anyone can receive a state-honoring quarter in change, at face value.
It’s a long running program – ten years, from 1999 through 2008.Five new quarters are introduced each year. Each of the 50 states is represented by a quarter dollar coin produced in the order each state was admitted to the Union. Accordingly, the first coin was the Delaware quarter, and the last coin will be the Hawaii quarter.Proof coins are issued by the mint at a premium, but the thrust of the program is the shiny new quarters -- with designs you’ve never seen before -- that have been cropping up in your change since 1999. So why are these face value collectibles featured on a web site of “valuable coin stories”?Perusing the pages of this site you will realize that the stories – the information – found here presents “value”, often in lieu of “price”. Because modern coins are produced in the billions each year, and have been for quite some time, the excitement of finding an unusual coin in change is rarely experienced. The value of the State Quarters program is how it exposes a fascinating hobby to those who, had they lived in earlier decades, would have found collectible coins in their pocket change. In 1999 the excitement returned. The plan for this section of the web site is to have a page for each of the fifty states quarters. Now… enjoy learning more about the US State Quarters from:
