The Presidential Dollar Coin Program Has Landed!
The Presidential Dollar coin series is now underway at banks near you. The mint, flushed with the success of the 50 State Quarters Program, can win in two ways with the “presidentials”.First… these are great coins for collectors – especially new collectors who may want to start their collections inexpensively. One dollar at the bank will get you one Presidential Dollar. Second… the mint is hoping that this time the public will permit a US dollar coin to actually circulate. Will that happen? The coins are quite appealing. They are thick coins -- very impressive with their heavy golden hue, strong presidential portraits, and a stunning presentation of the Statue of Liberty. Cut deep into the edge of each piece are the date, mint mark, and mottos, “E Pluribus Unum” and “In God We Trust”.

Four Presidential Dollars will be issued each year until every president (except those who are still alive, or have been dead for less than two years) has been represented. Release of the coins will be sequenced in the order the presidents served. In 2007, the first year of the program, coins were struck for
George Washington,
John Adams,
Thomas Jefferson,
and
James Madison.
In 2008 coins will be struck for
James Monroe,
John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson. and Martin Van Buren.
Although a US dollar coin has not widely circulated in recent times, maybe this time will be different. This writer believes that there is one more step our government could take to make the Presidential Dollars succeed as a circulating coin. Can you guess? That’s right. Retire the Paper One Dollar Bill. Bring on
The UnPaper One!
