Mississippi Quarter

Mississippi Quarter – Beneath the Magnolia

The Mississippi Quarter, specifically the Mississippi State Quarter, is the twentieth coin of the 50 State Quarter series of the US Mint.

While preparing to write this page I was struck by the simplicity of the design of this coin.

Unlike many of the other state quarters, Mississippi chose a single theme – a lush branch of magnolia blossoms beneath the state’s well known nickname, The Magnolia State.

Those unfamiliar with the state may see this design as merely decorative. However, on reflection, the magnolia may be seen for what it truly is… a powerful and evocative symbol of Mississippi’s culture, past and present. It is fair to state that the vision and focus of this image embraces more than one state, significant as it is to much of the southeastern region of the United States.

So… looking at the magnolia branch and blossoms on this quarter might easily transport one to the antebellum South – a fragrant approach down a lane lined with these venerable trees, framing a view of a fine old plantation home.

Now peel back another layer…

The magnolia blossom’s aroma is most evident on hot summer nights of unrelieved heat and humidity. In the stillness, can we catch the murmured ramblings of Tennessee Williams’ Blanche DuBois, railing against the irreversible collapse of her social standing?

It is said that Mississippi has contributed more world renowned authors than any other state. There is substantial evidence for that claim. Think: William Faulkner… Tennessee Williams… John Grisham … Nevada Barr … Richard Ford … Larry Brown … Margaret Walker Alexander … William Faulkner … Jerry Clower … Richard Wright … Tennessee Williams … Donna Tartt … Eudora Welty … Brad Watson … Beth Henley … Jimmy Buffett … Ellen Douglas … Walker Percy … Lewis Nordan … Frederick Barthelme … Shelby Foote … Greg Iles … Thomas Harris … Augustus Baldwin Longstreet … Willie Morris … Anne Moody … Elizabeth Spencer … Barry Hannah … Angela Jackson … William Attaway … Rick Bass

This rich literary tradition has helped maintain Mississippi’s place in the national heritage.

And, like the magnolia, Mississippi remains alive with change and growth… with due regard for its cultural DNA.
