Metal Detectors Are Fun… and Good for You

Metal detectors are a prolific source of valuable coin stories. As you may have noticed, there are many stories accessible on the Internet of treasure hunters and other, more casual users of these devices.

As this equipment has become more available, and capable, more significant numismatic material has come to light – to the benefit of collectors and museums around the world.

But the adventure that attaches to this form of sleuthing is not restricted to headline worthy discoveries.

It’s very exciting to find a coin lost when your grandparents were kids, or a cherished wedding ring lost last year at the beach (doubly rewarding if an inscription enables you to return it to its owner.)

Metal detecting offers an active diversion from the couch, the newspaper, and the TV remote. At minimum it encourages healthy exercise.

You could find a rare coin to increase your wealth (it’s happened)… or not.

Though few, if any, have succeeded in making a living from this hobby, the physical and psychic rewards are for many, more than enough.

Regardless of the outcome, an afternoon of swinging a detector about will surely clear your mind.

Like fishing, this growing hobby is an activity that you may enjoy in complete solitude, or in the company of friends. It can actually be quite social if you like to participate in hobby oriented groups and organizations.

For coin collectors, metal detecting finds represent an inexpensive way to build their accumulations. And each item found will now have two stories – its own, and the finder’s account of its discovery.

OK, so…

how do metal detectors work?

And…

how does one get started as a “metal detectorist”?
