Counterfeit Coin Threat Pales with Knowledge

A counterfeit coin can be a fake coin made to look like a real coin, or a real coin made to look like another real coin that’s much more valuable. Both coins are fraudulent. Each is all about deception.

So… will this be a Big Problem for you as a coin collector?

Not very likely, especially if you use some common sense, and learn a bit about the subject.

Realize that those with a criminal bent are powerfully motivated to beat the system, whether their chosen arena is that of rare coins, precious gems, or recognized works of art. Those who have applied their intelligence to the discovery of the fakes are equally, if not more, diligent and inventive.

Keep reading… knowledge is a good thing.

Why Counterfeit a Coin At All?

Whoever first made a phony coin was probably pretty desperate. Whereas the coin counterfeiters of today are targeting sophisticated collectors of high priced rarities, the poor schlub that came up with, for example, a counterfeit silver penny in the eleventh century was probably hoping to snag a crust of bread or a bowl of gruel at a cut rate price.

As recently as the 1950’s, I remember someone at school showing off a remarkably murky looking Liberty Standing quarter he received in change. This leaden colored piece was perhaps a remnant of the Great Depression of two decades prior. Truly the anguished creation of a fevered brain!

Modern inflation has eliminated this incentive level altogether.

The Bigger Game

In our time the fake or altered coin has become a high tech product. The techniques deployed for successful detection are also highly evolved. Escalating prices realized in the high end rare coin market has encouraged greater sophistication on the part of counterfeiters and those who combat them.
