Pieces of Eight

What is it about a Lost Treasure Story?

The phrase "lost treasure story" presents two ideas that bear a huge cargo of emotional impact: LOST... the greatest fear of childhood, and… TREASURE... the excitement of ungodly wealth, discovered in the rush of surprise and the thrill of the unexpected!

What you see scattered above are common examples of lost treasure coins – pieces of eight -- buried, shipwrecked, or hijacked.

Whether sunken silver or lost gold treasure, think of the owner's utter desolation -- or the intense frustration of those who've risked life, limb, and pocketbook on failed attempts at recovery.

Imagine also the thrill of the final discovery. These are stories of losing, seeking, and finding.

Stories about, for example, the 1715 Treasure Fleet, the famous shipwreck of the Hollandia, and the story about the coins of questionnable legality found within the wreck of t'Vliegent Hart, are a satisfying aspect of the coin collecting hobby.

Putting together a collection of treasure tales is another form of treasure hunting – and one that I continue to enjoy. Here’s what I’ve found so far:

The Ultimate Lost Treasure Story -- The 1715 Fleet

Hollandia -- an increasingly famous shipwreck

tVliegent Hart -- Secret Treasure

The War of Jenkins Ear, the Acapulco Galleon, and the Lima Coins of George II
